introduced within 20 feet of the present groundwAer table. However, CVRWQCB has
required that groundwater be monitored to determine whether the bacteria migrate to
groundwater. Bacteria are most likely to reach groundwater in the vicinity of MW-4, which
is screened to a depth of 60 feet and presently contains water. If bacteria reach groundwater
in MW-4, migration would then be radial away from this well. Therefore, a progressive
monitoring program involving additional wells and laboratory analyses has been devised to
monitor the migration and activity of the bacteria. This program is summarized in the
decision tree shown on Figure 1. Groundwater monitoring will occur on Mondays and
Thursdays of each week until the completion of the pilot test.
Monitoring program A will begin Monday, February 7. Wells MW-4 and MW-14 will be
screened and sampled. If inoculated bacteria or large bacterial populations are detected,
laboratory measurements of dissolved oxygen and carbon dioxide will be compared to field
readings to determine the accuracy of field measurements. If a correlation between field and
laboratory data can be shown, the frequency of laboratory sample collection will be reduced
during later events, as shown in the chart. If bacteria are detected, other nearby wells (MW-
5 and EW-1) will be added to the monitoring program. During the last weeks of the pilot
test, MW-8 may also be added to the program, if bacteria are detected in EW-1.
If you have any questions or comments, please contact our office.
Sincerely,
GEOLOGICAL AUDIT SERVICES, INC.
—12f
Bob Marty
Project Manager
U a,,,,
Victor B.
