hydrocarbons occurs, but the chemical and physical breakdown <br /> processes are only partially understood. <br /> 6) The plate count performed by our microbiologist has found the <br /> existing soil conditions to be favorable to microbial growth <br /> and migration. As noted in section 5 above, the rate at which <br /> the radius of influence of an inoculation well expands is <br /> determined by the rate of microbial reproduction and the rate <br /> of bacterial spreading. Both of these rates are partly <br /> dependent on hydrocarbon concentrations. Zones of little or no <br /> contamination inhibit the movement of the bacteria, and if <br /> such zones are present locally, remediation could be slowed. <br /> The radius of influence may vary between wells; actual field <br /> data based on confirmatory drilling are necessary to determine <br /> this. <br /> 7) Currently, it is our intention to use monitoring wells MW-7 , <br /> MW-8 , MW-9 , MW-14 and EW-1 for inoculation to the groundwater. <br /> Air (not pure oxygen) will be introduced into MW-8 and MW-14 . <br /> Air will also be introduced into (dry) monitoring wells MW-3 , <br /> MW-4 and MW-5 and remediation wells VW-1 through VW-7 . <br /> 8) Bacteria that require large amounts of oxygen will not be used <br /> in this project . True soil bacteria are microaerophilic and <br /> facultatively anaerobic. If excess oxygen is present, it <br /> becomes toxic and soil bacteria produce enzymes to destroy it. <br /> No concentrated forms of oxygen (such as hydrogen peroxide or <br /> liquid oxygen) will be utilized. <br /> Sufficient aeration will be achieved by use of a blower. Air <br /> will be introduced into the monitoring and remediation wells <br /> at a rate of 2 to 5 psi per well, using a EG&G ROTRON EN 404 <br /> Explosion-Proof Regenerative Blower. The blower will be hard <br /> piped into each sealed well and, in the groundwater wells, <br /> polyvinyl hose will carry the air into the water. <br /> 9) Note: Italicized information in this section is confidential <br /> and is not to be distributed without prior written permission. <br /> This information contains trade secrets and is proprietary. <br /> The bacteria are grown in a "growth media" for 48 hours, and <br /> the resulting bacterial culture is used as the Inoculum. At <br /> the time of inoculation the growth media has been spent, <br /> having been converted into biomass. The inoculum is called a <br /> cream because most of the water is associated with the <br /> bacterial cells and the culture is very viscous. The nutrients <br /> in the media at this time have been exhausted and the bacteria <br /> are still in the log phase of growth. This cream is composed <br /> primarily of bacteria reaching populations of 1010 (or more) <br /> per milliliter (ml) of water. <br /> 3 <br />
