4.1 Vapor Monitoring
4.1.1 Oxygen and Carbon Dioxide
Oxygen and carbon dioxide monitoring will occur weekly throughout the remediation
project Samples will be collected using field instruments similar or identical to the
instruments used during the pilot study Samples will be collected following procedures
outlined in Section 3 3.
4.1.2 Organic Vapor
 P
IOrganic vapors (OV's) will be monitored using a photo-ionization detector (PID) The PID
to be used is a Thermo Environmental 580A, calibrated to isobutylene These measurements
will be collected at the same time (weekly) and using the same protocol as oxygen and
carbon dioxide sample collection Additional description of the PID is contained in the FRP
4.1.2 Methane
None of the strains of bacteria utilized in the inoculation have demonstrated the ability to
I produce methane According to Mr Hoeltgen, methane can be produced only by specific
bacteria, under strict anaerobic conditions, with a suitable substrate, temperature and
moisture Presently, methane-producing conditions do not exist, conditions at the site are
microaerophilic, and are unsuitable for methane production
Bioremediation monitoring by GeoAudit at similar sites, using identical inoculum, have
Ishown no methane production Oxygen and moisture will be provided at this site,
preventing methane-producing conditions from forming Therefore, we see no need to
collect samples for methane analysis
Soil Monitoring
4.2 So g
Bioremediation progress in the soil will be monitored by direct sampling via drilling of soil
bonngs GeoAudit anticipates drilling two soil bonngs on a quarterly basis to determine the
effectiveness of the bioremediation system However, the number and placement of the soil
bonngs should be determined on a quarterly basis and may vary, but shall not be less than
one or greater than three bonngs per quarter Placement of soil bonngs will be based upon
data from the previous quarter The CVRWQCB will be notified at least 5 days in advance
to any proposed drilling of soil bonngs
Initially, GeoAudit proposes to drill one soil boring approximately 3 feet northeast of VW-7,
which will receive inoculum during the full-scale inoculation, and one boring approximately
3 to 5 feet southeast of VW-4, which received inoculum during pilot study The first boring
will provide "virgin" data for the full-scale inoculation, the second boring will confirm the
remediation of hydrocarbons in the area of VW-4 as a result of the pilot study inoculation
_S-1 A.&I s.— I.. 7
1 33,C3.wba h,,%-94 /
