Final Remedial Plan - Geweke
' 2 January 1992
Page 8 of . 15
The ET Vaclean 1000 equipped is a ui ed with a low oil pressure and/or high
coolant temperature safety system, which in case of malfunction
turns the ignition and the fuel off. In addition, the engine
' becomes inoperative when the air-to-fuel ratio can not be
maintained within certain limits.
_.
The_ _system is installed iri an- enclosed and lockable 'struc . ure_ o
protect the system from tampering by unauthorized persoinel.iA non-
smoking area of 20 feet radius is established.
3 . 5 . HYDROCARBON DESTRUCTION AND HEALTH RISK FACTOR
' Based upon the existing site assessment data, approximately 3 , 000
gallons of gasoline had been released to the soil, indicating a
total mass of approximately 18, 500 pounds. Please note again that
' the figures presented here are liberally calculated. A destruction
rate of greater than 90% is anticipated. The plan calls for an
average daily air emission of 5 lbs of TPH. it is therefore
anticipated that the vacuum extraction is operational for a period
between 12 to 24 months.
The data presented here are based upon the operation of the Vaclean
' 1000 using propane as supplementary fuel. The use of natural gas
for this purpose has several additional advantages. Natural gas, is
less expensive than propane and is readily available at the site.
' Supplemental fuel promotes not only a more complete combustion of
the hydrocarbon contaminants, natural gas is also proven to burn
very cleanly, leaving practically -no by-products.
3 . 6 . MONITORING PROGRAM
' To monitor the degradation of hydrocarbons, vapor from the
extraction wells is metered for the presence of volatile organics .
A weekly-monthly monitoring is scheduled for this purpose.
' A decrease of the organic vapor content is anticipated to occur
within the first weeks. Upon reaching a constant level of typically
' between 500 to 1, 000 ppm as hexane, a confirmatory sampling is
scheduled (Section 3 .7 .7 . ) . A treatment period between 12 to 24
months is estimated.
1
1
