Mr.Harlin Knoll September 27,2006
Baseline Subsurface Evaluation
USA Station No.3502,Lodi,CA
Page 2
Professional Geologist or Professional Engineer, and will be conducted in accordance
with standards established by the Tri-Regional Board Staff Recommendations For
Preliminary Investigation And Evaluation Of Underground Tank Sites (2004) and San
Joaquin County Environmental Health Department (SJCEHD) guidelines.
Task 1: Pre-Field Activities
Prior to field work, Stratus will prepare a site-specific health and safety plan, retain and
schedule a licensed C-57 drilling contractor, and obtain soil boring permits from
SJCEHD. The proposed boring locations will be marked and Underground Service Alert
will be contacted at least 48 hours in advance of the scheduled field activities to locate
subsurface utilities.
Task 2: Field Activities
A C-57 licensed drilling contractor will advance four soil borings to approximately 50
feet bgs using a truck mounted drilling rig equipped with hollow stem augers. The initial
5 feet of each boring will be advanced with a hand auger and/or posthole digger to reduce
the possibility of damaging underground utilities. Soil samples will be collected in 5-foot
intervals using a California-modified split spoon sampler equipped with three pre-cleaned
brass sleeves. If groundwater is encountered during the advancement of the borings, a
groundwater sample will be collected. The groundwater sample will be collected using a
pre-cleaned metal bailer and transferred to laboratory-supplied glass vials (VOAs).
Each soil and groundwater sample will be labeled, placed in a resealable plastic bag, and
stored in an ice-chilled cooler. The samples will remain chilled until relinquished to a
state-certified analytical laboratory. Strict chain-of-custody procedures will be followed
from the time the samples are collected until the time the samples are relinquished to the
laboratory. Remaining soil contained in the acrylic liners will be screened for volatile
organic compounds (VOCs) using a photo-ionization detector(PID).
Stratus will record PID readings, soil types, and other pertinent geologic data on the
borehole log. A minimum of two soil samples from each boring will be submitted for
chemical analyses. Additional samples may be analyzed at the discretion of the
registered professional overseeing the project.
Task 3: Waste Management
Soil generated during field activities will be placed in DOT-approved, 55-gallon steel
drums and stored on-site pending disposal. Discrete disposal characterization samples will
be collected for analysis. Upon receipt of laboratory analysis, the drums will be transported
to a licensed facility for disposal.
KAUSA Gasoline\3502\Correspondence\USA3502 Baseline Study letter.doc
