Subsurface Environmental Investigation November 29, 1988 <br /> ARCO Service Station 760, Lodi, California AGS 38048-1 <br /> Following removal of the tank, Applied GeoSystems ' geologist <br /> noted evidence of soil contamination including discernible <br /> hydrocarbon odor and visible discoloration. Additional <br /> excavation was undertaken in an attempt to remove visibly <br /> contaminated soil. Approximately 4 to 5 cubic yards of soil were <br /> excavated and stockpiled at the station. Excavated soil was <br /> placed on plastic sheeting and covered. This soil was removed <br /> from the site on September 16, 1988 and taken by Universal <br /> Engineering to the Kettleman Hills Class I disposal facility. <br /> Following excavation of 4 to 5 cubic yards of visibly <br /> contaminated soil, Applied GeoSystems was directed by Mr. Knoll <br /> of the SJLHD to cease additional excavation. At that time, <br /> visibly contaminated soil remained at the bottom and in the <br /> sidewalls of the excavation. Mr. Knoll indicated that a Soil <br /> Remediation Work Plan would be required before the SJLHD would <br /> permit additional excavation. One soil sample was then collected <br /> from an approximate depth of 8 feet in the excavation, or 2 feet <br /> below the base of and adjacent to the fill port end of the former <br /> tank. The native soil consisted of sandy silt. Because of <br /> safety considerations, ARCO requested that the excavation be <br /> backfilled with clean, imported pea gravel.
