April 7, 1992 --M
ARCO Service Station No 760, Lodi, California
Removal of Underground Tanks
On June 18, 1991, a geologist from RESNA observed the removal of two single-walled,
8,000-gallon gasoline-storage tanks and one 6,000-gallon gasoline-storage tank. Our
geologist noted there were no signs of leaks, pitting, or holes in the tanks Mr Enc Trevena
of the San Joaquin County Public Health Services, Environmental Health Division
' (SJCPHS-EHD), and Mr. Dave Carroll of ARCO observed the tank removal The tanks
were removed by ARCO's subcontractor Golden West of Brentwood, California The tanks
were transported by H and H Shipping Services of San Francisco, California, to their facility
During excavation and tank removal, our geologist used a PID to evaluate the soil for the
presence of hydrocarbon vapors Two vertical trenches were excavated to 13 feet below
grade (within 2 feet of the former tank bottoms) under each former tank on June 18, 1991,
and soil samples were collected Sample locations are shown on the Generalized Site Plan
dated June 1991 (Plate 3) Soil samples S-13-T1N, S-13-T2N, and S-13-T3N were collected
under the northern end of each tank, and samples S-13-TIS, S-13-T2S, and S-13-T3S were
collected under the southern end of each tank In addition, soil sample S-10-1S was
collected from the sidewall south of former tank T3 at 10 feet below grade Soil samples
S-6-1N and S-10-2N were collected from the north sidewall because discolored soil was
noted by the geologist Soil removed was stockpiled north of the dispenser islands At
ARCO's request, the tank cavity was not overexcavated.
After forwarding results of the above soil samples, we requested authorization from the
SJCPHS-EHD for the contractor to place a geofabnc on the bottom and sidewalls of the
1 former tank cavity and backfill the former tank cavity with soil excavated from the new tank
cavity At the request of the SJCPHS-EHD, we forwarded a product information for
geotextile fabric on July 17, 1991 With verbal authorization from the SJCPHS-EHD on
July 17, 1991, we observed the contractor place the geofabnc in the former tank cavity
1
38048-5 7
i
