They are colorless liquids with
strong aromatic petroleum Hydrocarbon-like odors. They are flammable, moderately
volatile, their vapors are header than air and they have low solubility in water.
Exposure to these materials in excess of their recommended exposure limits can cause mild
eye, nose and throat irritation and can produce a narcotic effect on the central nervous
system. Symptoms of exposure can include head aches, nausea, drowsiness, dizziness and
loss of coordination. Prolonged exposure can result in unconsciousness and coma.
Although not toxic by skin adsorption, these materials are adsorbed through the skin and
may contribute to other routes of exposure. They all defat the skin. There is some .
evidence that prolonged and repeated exposure may result in a condition known as"solvent
sindrome"characterized by reversible central nervous system damage. There is also some
evidence to indicate that'roiuene may sensitize the heart, predisposing exposure victims to
cardiac arrhythmias: Gasoline containing Benzene,Toluene,Ethyl Benzene and Xylenes
_
_--maybe-potentially-carcinogenic._Benzene_is_a_known_human_carcinogen_and_has_been,
l
