If the
decision is macre to base respirator use on OVA measurements, 50 ppm should be
used as the critical concentration which dictates the use of the respirator(Level Q.
If concentrations of organic vapors in the air exceed the background levels by over
50 ppm by OVA measurements, the field personnel must move out of the area. if
the concentration remains at or above the 50 ppm level for more than five minutes,
the Project Safety Offic.r and/or the Project Manger should be contacted and a
decision made regarding whether to proceed with the work wearing respirators and
extending the restricted work zone accordingly.
If the decision is made to work while wearing a respi*ator, the conditions in Section
5.1 are to be complied.with at all times. Cartridges for the respirators will be
replaced daily or sooner if break-through occurs.
5.5 Work Site Monitoring
Representative breathing zone samples will be taken from the onset of drilling every 15
minutes for the first hour and then hourly thereafter as Iong as airborne levels are below
50 ppm at all times. Monitoring frequency will be increased if 50 ppm is exceeded or odors
are objectionable until that condition is absent for at least one hour. Note: Respirators
will be required if 50 ppm is exceeded or odors are excessive.
5.6 Decontamination
Drilling equipment will be decontaminated by steam-cleaning. Sampling equipment will be
cleaned witb.a_tri-sodium phosphate (TSP) detergent or ALCONOX.
ML
h
_ s
i
a
