11 May 1998
AGE-NC Project No 97-0312
TPH-g, TPH-d,BTE&X and MTBE TPH-g and TPH-d were detected in the soil stockpile samples
at concentrations as high as 1,500 ppm and 4,100 ppm, respectively Stockpile sampling was
summarized the Quarterly Report -December 1997
3 0. PROCEDURES
3 1 MONITORING WELL PURGE PROCEDURES
On 11 March 1998, a Solinst water level meter was used to measure the depth to ground water in
five monitoring wells at the site relative to the tops of the well casings The ground water elevation
in each well and hydraulic gradient were determined from these data (Table 1)
After measuring ground water depths, monitoringwells UST-1 through UST-5 were purged using
a Grundfos submersible purge pump Approximately 100 gallons of water was removed from UST-
1, approximately 10 to 15 gallons of water were removed from UST-2 through UST-5 (a minimum
of three well volumes for each well) Temperature, pH and conductivity of purged water were
measured at regular Intervals during purging using an ICM model 52200 water analyzer Monitoring
well stabilization data and field sheets are Included in Appendix A Purged water was stored on-site
in 55-gallon DOT drums pending Iaboratory analyses
32 COLLECTION OF GROUND WATER SAMPLES
Water samples were retrieved from each purged well using new disposable bailers Each sample was
transferred into 40-m1 EPA-approved VOA vials containing 0 5 ml of 18% hydrochloric acid as a
preservative and into one I-liter amber bottle without preservative The samples were labeled, placed
in a chilled container and transported to McCampbell Analytical, Inc (MAI) in Pacheco, California
The samples were analyzed in accordance with EPA Methods 5030 and 8015m for TPH-g and TPH-
d,in accordance with EPA Method 602 for BTE&X and MTBE and In accordance with EPA Method
8260 for volatile organic compounds with oxygenated compounds
3 3 STOCKPILE SOIL DISPOSAL/EXCAVATION BACKFILL
The stockpiled soil was previously characterized in November 1997 On 16 March 1998, 241 tons
of soil (approximately 180 cubic yards) were transported to Forward, Inc for disposal Load weight
sheets are Included in Appendix C Clean fill material was Imported to backfill the excavation to a
depth of approximately 7 feet below surface grade (bsg) Two compaction tests were performed by
Arrowhead Consultants at a depth of approximately 7 feet bsg The remaining stockpiled soil was
Advanced GeoEn%ironmcntal,Inc
