c. The surge block will then be lowered gradually into the screened area. The amount of <br /> material drawn into the well will be frequently measured and will be removed by frequent bailing <br /> with the sand bailer. <br /> d. Repeat the first three steps at least three times. <br /> e. Upon completion of swabbing and bailing,the well will be pumped using an electric <br /> submersible pump. <br /> f. Temperature, turbidity, specific conductivity and pH readings, measured for stabilization <br /> before, during, and after development operations,by the COE Representative. Stabilization shall <br /> mean variation of less than 0.2 pH units, variation of plus or minus 1/2 degree Celsius (1 degree <br /> Fahrenheit), and less than a 10 percent change in specific conductance measured between three <br /> consecutive readings with one casing volume of water removed between each reading. Turbidity <br /> shall be determined in accordance with ASTM D 1889. Temperature, specific conductivity and <br /> pH shall be conducted in accordance with EPA 600/4-79/020. <br /> g. Water removed during development and testing operations shall be contained in D.O.T. <br /> approved drums and disposed of by the contractor,in accordance with paragraph 2.8 <br /> CONTAINERIZATION OF DEVELOPMENT WATER, AND DRILL CUTTINGS. <br /> 3.5 WELL DECOMMISSIONING/ABANDONMENT <br /> 3.5.1 Three (3)monitoring wells (35, 97, and 135 feet deep) will be abandoned under this <br /> contract. The three monitoring wells will not be abandoned until the two new monitoring wells <br /> have been completed and sampled. <br /> 3.5.2 All necessary permits will be obtained prior to commencing the field work. The contractor <br /> will coordinate with the Tracy DD IEC for the different agency permits needed. <br /> 3.5.3 Wells to be abandoned during this task will be destroyed according to minimum <br /> requirements set forth in Bulletin 74-90,California Well Standards,prepared by the state of <br /> California DWR. The DWR has the responsibility for developing these standards under California <br /> Water Code Section 231. According to these standards, abandoned wells must be destroyed to <br /> ensure the quality of groundwater is protected and eliminate a possible physical hazard to humans <br /> and animals. The focus of the decommissioning activities should be to effectively seal subsurface <br /> geologic materials and prevent cross-contamination of aquifers. <br /> 3.5.4 Each well must be investigated before it is destroyed to determine its condition and details <br /> of its construction prior to abandonment. All undesirable materials and obstructions that would <br /> interfere with well destruction must be removed (DWR, 1991). <br /> 3.5.5 Minimum well abandonment guidelines require that the well casing will be completely filled <br /> 02671-0010 <br />
