long section of rigid PVC, pipe 1/4 inch smaller in diameter than the inside diameter of the well <br /> casing, through the entire well. If the pipe does not pass freely, the well will not be accepted. <br /> 3.3.8 Protective Cover Placement <br /> A flush-to-ground protective steel utility vault shall be installed around the well casing and <br /> protective casing which has been cut off below grade (see figure_). The protective casing shall <br /> consist of watertight metal casing with an inside diameter at least 4 inches greater than the inside <br /> diameter of the monitoring well casing. The utility vault will be install at finished grade elevation <br /> of the construction site. The flush mounted protective utility vault shall be constructed with a <br /> concrete ground surface seal. The ground surface seal shall be installed around the utility vault <br /> and shall not be placed between the vault and the well casing.The utility vaults lid or cover shall <br /> have the wording"ground-water monitoring well" on its outer surface. The utility vault lid or <br /> cover shall be kept in place by screws or bolts. <br /> 3.3.9 Well Identification <br /> A corrosion resistant metal tag shall be affixed to the exterior and interior of the protective cover. <br /> The metal tag shall be stamped with the well identification number,provided by the Government <br /> representative, and date of well installation. <br /> 3.3.10 Protective Post <br /> 5 <br /> Four protective steel posts shall be installed at each monitoring well location,located 4 feet from <br /> the well equally spaced. The steel posts shall be filled with cement. The posts shall be set in <br /> cement, and shall extend a minimum of 3 feet above the ground surface. One third of the posts' <br /> total length shall be below ground surface. <br /> 3.4 WELL DEVELOPMENT <br /> Within 3 days of completion of each well,but no sooner than 24 hours after cement grouting is <br /> completed,the well shall be developed. Development shall be accomplished by swabbing and <br /> bailing followed by pumping per ASTM D 5092. At a minimum the following procedures will be <br /> executed: <br /> a. A sand bailer or similar device will be used to removed sand or fine material from the <br /> bottom of the well. The well will be bailed until less than one teaspoon of sand or fine material is <br /> collected in the bailer. <br /> b. The well will then be swabbed with a valved surge block appropriately sized for the inside <br /> diameter of the well. The swabbing will begin just below the static water level in the casing, with <br /> a gentle action, until free movement of water through the screen is assured, at which time surging <br /> can progress more actively. <br /> 02671-009 <br />
