PERMIT/SERVICES <br /> Fifth Senatorial District <br /> 31 East Channel Street, Room 440 <br /> Stockton, California 95202 <br /> DEFENSE DISTRIBUTION REGION WEST - TRACY SITE, REMEDIATION <br /> ACTIVITIES <br /> Dear Senator Johnston: <br /> Thank you for your letter of January 29, 1993 , inquiring <br /> about the status of the remediation efforts taking place at <br /> Defense Distribution Region West (DDRW) Tracy. Currently, DDRW <br /> Tracy is in the midst of a sitewide remedial investigation to <br /> evaluate the extent of any releases of hazardous substances to <br /> the environment. They have just completed a portion of the <br /> investigation to characterize ground water contaminated by <br /> volatile organic compounds (VOCs) . The Federal Environmental <br /> Protection Agency (EPA) and the California EPA, represented by <br /> the Department of Toxic Substances Control (Department) and the <br /> Central Valley Regional Water Quality Control Board (RWQCB) , have <br /> had an active role in the oversight of this investigation. To <br /> address the concerns of your letter, the Department has been in <br /> coordination with the RWQCB and they have prepared a separate <br /> response to you. <br /> Your letter conveyed the concerns of Mr. Glenn Robertson, <br /> who lives near the DDRW Tracy Facility. My staff has been in <br /> contact with Mr. Robertson and has discussed his concerns with <br /> him. We have also been in contact with other residents in the <br /> impacted area to hear their concerns and solicit their comments <br /> regarding the ongoing remediation efforts at DDRW Tracy. <br /> The contamination detected at the Robertson residence can <br /> not be directly attributed to DDRW Tracy at this stage of the <br /> investigation. Tricholorethene (TCE) and tetrachloroethene (PCE) <br /> were the contaminants found directly attributable to DDRW Tracy. <br /> The primary contaminant in the Robertson well is carbon <br /> tetrachloride. Both TCE and PCE have not been detected in this <br /> well. The RWQCB is in the process of collecting and analyzing <br /> data to determine the responsible party for ground water <br /> contamination affecting the Robertsons and other residents living <br /> in the greater Tracy area. Although the contamination detected <br /> in Mr. Robertson's well has not been attributable to DDRW Tracy, <br /> at this time, the facility is currently providing bottled water <br />
