State Senate
31 fi Channel RM 440
Stockton, CA 95202
Dear Senator Johnston,
please accept my heartfelt thanks for your interest and conoern in the
matter of ground water contamination in the vicinity of Defense Distribution
Region Wost-Tracy. Speaking as head of one of the families directly affected
by this problem, I certainly appreciate the unsolicited support you and your
staff are providing. This demonstates fully the reputation you have of
anticipating problems within this district and caring for the people as if they
your own personal family.
The contamination problem arises from past procedures at what was Defense
Depot Tracy, begining with World War II and continuing to some unknown
date. Activities contributing to chemicall spills may have been consistent with
DDRW's mission and probably reflected the laws and attitudes of the time.
At any rate I boar no resentment or malice toward any personnel who work
c: Lave worked there. The question asked now becomes one of resolution.
Because of this I now ask for your help.
As the fattier of four young children with less than fully-developed immune
systems and husband of a fatigued and stressed teacher, 1 am concerned
about potentially serious health problems that may affect them due to this u
unresolved problem. Drinking water is being provided by DDRW, but what
risks accrue from cooking, washing, bathing, eating fruits and vegetables
irrigated from contaminated water, or breathing vapors released by these ro
materials. Both agricultural wells and domestic wells are pumping up
polluted waters from various depths for these uses. Can epidemiologic :
studies be cited regarding both acute and chronic ingestion of the pollutants o
in question?
Is the Regional W-k.er Quality Control Board acting as a true third party? At
some D1e hea: ';s and workshops, representatives from RWQCB have
sp i to bo interested n limiting discussion than in fully listening
