i
FEF1. 1E. 199, 4:4E PM P 5
W ..
to citizen inquiry.Has the plume been fully defined? Most monitoring wells
are oriented along east-west lines to detect north-ward flow, Few
monitoring wells are located on a north-south line, limiting knowledge of
eastward-flowing plumes. Aerial photos taken by the US government over a
numtmrr of decades show consistantly the remains of several historical
streams as part of the Corral Hollow alluvial fan, indicating that preferential
pathways within coarse grained stream deposits may be present. A 1937
aerial photo clearly indicates the major underground preferential pathway
passing through a portion of the depot somewhat south of what became the
rail facilities and the barrel stacking yards indicated as source of the
contamination plume. A 1947 photo indicates tvx barrel storage areas and
what appears to be a disposal pit-all lacated generally over this 4truucture.
Former depot employees reported dumping the contents of leaking barrels
into this pit and later complaining of headaches after having worked in th og's
areas. There appear to be no off-post monitoring wells tapping into this
geologic structure; all current wells are located geneally north of the line of
this stream deposit, is this perhaps an unidentified plume? Is it the source
of contamination of the Rose well and also mine? Has tho RWQCB initiated an
investigation of this potential plume? Why not? Focusing w much attention
on the plume heading north towards the Elks Club and ignoring definition of
the eastern leading edge invites too many further questions. Investigations
should proceed to assess if this area is a potential source area. Additionall,
further test wails are needed to identify all potential preferential pathways.
Why was the San Joaquin County Department of Health Services pressured of
their portion of the investigation?
Senator Johnson, would you please assist in obtaining answers to the above
questions? Suddenly the problem appears much more serious than
previously assumed. The staff at AAT has seemed to be be very
accommodating, but too many questions remain unanswered even after all
U-io years of study. I do wonder if undefined and unresolved problems exist
on other bases in your district
Glenn S Robertson
cc: AncW
Cabral
Pomt}o
Bomar
