David Wang, P.E.
Page 4
August 17, 1989
Sections 3 . 2 . 2 . 13, 3 . 4 . 4 . 15, and 3 . 4 . 5. 10 GEOLOGIC WELL LOGS:
o The Department recommends that geophysical logs
(spontaneous potential, short and long normal resistivity,
and caliper) supplement the formation sampling at well each
cluster. These logs would supply a reference that formation
samples could be compared against.
Sections 3 . 2 . 2 . 10, 3 . 4 .4 . 12 , and 3 . 4 . 5.7 WELL SEALS:
o The Department prefers the use of bentonite pellets over
slurry in the construction of well seals. Bentonite slurry
may be forced into the formation by the weight of the grout,
defeating the purpose of a well seal .
Section 3 . 8 . 2 . 2 SYSTEM MONITORING:
o The statement of work requires that the contractor be
on-site for only one eight hour day per week to provide
routine monitoring. We are concerned that the period
between visits is too long. The Department recommends that
DDTC personnel be trained in the systems op>_rations and
perform daily spot checks of its' performance. Also DDTC
and regulatory agency personnel should be included in the
notification process in case of a system failure.
Section 3 . 10 GROUNDWATER MODELING
o The Department requests that a copy of the publicly
available software be submitted for our review. Data to be
evaluated should also be forwarded. We request that the
programs and data be submitted on 3 .5 inch disks at a 720 k
density.
Section 3 . 15 ADDRESSES
o The Department requests that deliverables be sent to:
The Department of Health Services
Toxic Substance Control Program
ATTN: Mr. David Wang, P.E.
4250 Power Inn Road
Sacramento, CA 95826
Any changes will be further notified.
ii:P`inasco
Waste Management Engineer
