capture zone around each operating extraction well. <br /> It is agreed that a combined capture zone for several closely spaced wells is <br /> a more realistic depiction of hydraulic conditions at the site, but only if <br /> the closely spaced wells are all pumping. In case of the capture zone around <br /> wells EW011AU and EW037AU, only EW011AU was pumping. Please, reconsider the <br /> original EPA comment. <br /> Item 6. General Comment: The RTC states that " (N) Labels for the northern and <br /> southern infiltration galleries are already on the subject figure. The sewage <br /> lagoons and storm drain holding pond (percolation ponds) already have labels <br /> with arrows. The injection wells, CD1 and IG1 have labels adjacent to there <br /> symbols on the map as well a descriptions in the legend. The injection wells <br /> have not been used, and adding labels seems unwarranted. Adding the detail of <br /> a text descriptions of physical locations to the Executive Summary seems <br /> unwarranted; these locations are shown on maps that are clearer than word <br /> descriptions." <br /> The EPA comment was not adequately addressed. EPA concurs that labels for the <br /> northern and southern infiltration galleries suffice. EPA did not comment on <br /> the sewage lagoons and storm drain holding pond indicating that their <br /> depiction is sufficiently clear. However, the Army's response questions the <br /> necessity to add clarity to Figure 5.2-1 with respect to the location of the <br /> injection wells, CD1 and IG1. Since the Report references these features and <br /> since Figure 5.2-1 is unclear with respect to the location of these features, <br /> please revise the figure as originally requested. The clear location of these <br /> features on the groundwater contour map will help explain groundwater flow in <br /> these areas and facilitate the evaluation of the effectiveness of the remedial <br /> action. <br /> Item 5. Specific Comments: The RTC states that " (N) Figure 5.3-7 does not <br /> indicate that the wells were not operating. It only indicates there were no <br /> sample data. The 9Q98 sampling of any operating wells numbered EW 013 through <br /> EW022 and EW 029 through EW037 did not occur." <br /> Please explain why operating wells numbered EW 013 through EW022 and EW 029 <br /> through EW037 were not sampled during the fourth quarter 1998. <br /> Item 13. Specific Comments: The RTC states that "(N) The figure only indicates <br /> when samples were collected from extraction wells for TCE analyses. Some wells <br /> were operating but were not sampled." <br /> Please explain why these wells were not sampled. <br /> Item 15. Specific Comments: The RTC states that "(N) There is no evidence <br /> indicating that the measurement at the well was erroneous, although it may be <br /> anomalous. A change in the contours if the elevation is not used would not <br /> have an impact on interpretations. Therefore, no revision was made to this <br /> 3 <br />
