(GOLD
BOND BUILDING PRODUCTS),800 WEST CHURCH STREET,STOCKTON,SAN JOAQUIN
COUNTY
In response to your 17 October 1997 request,we have reviewed the Solvent Tank Site Closure Report, and your
files for completion of site investigation and remedial action for the former"product", and"waste ink and solvent"
underground storage tanks at the above site. Based on this review,Board staff have determined that additional
information is needed to determine the presence of soil and groundwater contamination.
The tanks contained isopropyl acetate, isopropyl alcohol, toluene, alcohol, normal propyl acetate, acetone,
cyclohexane,n-heptane,methyl cyclohexane, isopropenol, C6-C8 parafins, and cycloparafm. After tank removal,
soil samples from the pits were analyzed for total petroleum hydrocarbons,benzene, chlorobenzene;
dichlorobenzenes, ethylbenzene, toluene, and xylenes, using EPA Methods 8015 and 8020. The TPH as diesel,
and benzene detected in the soil may be due to a release from other tanks on-site. The toluene detected in the soil
could have been released from these tanks or the other tanks. Therefore, soil and groundwater, beneath the product
and waste ink and solvent tanks, need to be sampled and analyzed using EPA Methods 8260 and 8270 to detect the
presence of acetone and other volatile and semivolatile hydrocarbons. Many of the chemicals contained in these
tanks are not listed under these EPA Methods; however, their peaks may occur on the chromatograms. Based on
our chemist's advice, all chemical peaks shown on the chromatograms need to be identified. This includes both
the listed and unlisted chemical peaks for these methods.
If contamination is detected, then its lateral and vertical extent will need to be determined and possibly remediated.
The Tri-Regional Board Staff Recommendations for Preliminary Investigation and Evaluation of Underground
Tank Sites and its Appendix A and B Reports are included.
Upon receipt of this information, we can complete our review of your request for no further action.
If there are any questions, please call me at(916)255-3128.
PATRICIA A.ANDERSON
Enclosures
cc: Ms.Margaret Lagorio, San Joaquin County Environmental Health Department, Stockton
