Table I-2-1 EWSF Waste Streams
Form 1 Waste Form 1 consists of waste explosives that, because of configuration or composition, are
best treated by open detonation. Examples are explosive assemblies or devices that may
detonate during open burning.
Form 2 Waste Form 2 consists of waste explosives that, because of configuration or composition, are
best treated by open burning in the open burning pan. Examples are explosive parts and pieces
that are generated during explosives formulation, processing,or testing,or that are being
removed from inventory.
Form 3 Waste Form 3 consists of waste explosives that, because of their configuration or composition,
are best treated by open burning in the thermal treatment unit(burn cage). Examples are wet
machine fines generated during explosives processing;wet,explosives-contaminated sludge
from weirs and settling basins;and wet, expendable filters from the re-cycle system.
Form 4 Waste Form 4 consists of waste material contaminated with energetic materials that are best
treated by open burning in the thermal treatment unit(bum cage). Examples are paper;rags;
plastic tubing;dry, expendable filters from vacuum systems;and PPE used in explosives
operations. The waste is judged to retain explosives hazards and is,therefore, considered to be
reactive waste.
I-2.2.4 Explosive Waste Storage Containers
The explosives wastes are stored in a variety of containers depending on the characteristics of the
waste. The types of containers used include explosives-safety-approved,plastic containers, U.S.
Department of Transportation-(DOT-)approved metal or fiber drums, and other approved
containers. Container sizes and type of waste to be stored in each container are outlined in Table
I-2-2.
Table I-2-2 Explosive Waste Storage Containers
LLNL
Waste
Form Description Waste Containers Used
1 Explosive charges Packaging is item-specific(based on type, size, and
shape of the explosive unit)
2 Explosive pieces, powders, and DOT or LLNL explosives safety-approved containers.
parts
3 Filtration systems waste Cotton bags inside poly bags inside DOT or LLNL
explosives safety-approved containers.
4 Debris contaminated with Poly bags placed into DOT or LLNL explosives safety-
explosive materials with potential approved containers.
for detonation
LLNL Site 300 Contingency Plan I-2-5 January 2019
Appendix I--2,EWSF
