Its primary function is
to serve as a high explosive (HE) and materials testing site. The site covers an area
of 11 square miles.
Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory has applied to the Department of Health
Services (DHS) and the Environmental Protection Agency for permits to authorize
the continued operation of an existing container storage and treatment unit, located
in the southeast corner of the facility.
Lawrence Livermore has other hazardous waste management units at this facility
which are not included as part of this decision. These include:
• Two hazardous waste landfills. At present DHS and EPA are reviewing a
closure plan for these units.
• Three burn pits.
