v
■ Lawrence Livemeore National Laboratory
July 21, 1989
Mr. Mike Higgins
Central Valley Region
California Regional Water Quality Control Board
3443 Routier Road
Sacramento, Ca. 95827
Dear Mr. Higgins,
On July 17, 1989, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory verbally ` j?
reported to you that on the same day a spill occurred from the
Building 801 underground wastewater retention system (Tank
801-R2U1) . As required by Title 23 of the California Code of
Regulations, Chapter 3, Subchapter 16, Article 5, Section 2652(c) , a
written report, in the form of the "Underground Storage Tank
Unauthorized Release (Leak)/Contamination Site Report", is hereby
being submitted within five days of identification of the leak.
The release occurred as a result of puncturing the end of the tank
with an auger while attempting to obtain a soil sample. The soil
sample was for completion of investigation of an earlier leak
detected through precision testing.
The prior leak had been repaired and a confirmatory precision test on
July 14 had shown the tank to be tight.
If you have any questions please call Connie DeGrange, Leader,
Environmental Guidance and Monitoring Division at (415) 422-5167.
Sincerely,
Rich, d C.
