F
LLNL Site 300
Environmental Investigations Quarterly
October-December 1987
Introduction
This report summarizes work performed through December 31, 1987, at Lawrence Livermore
National Laboratory (LLNL) Site 300 by the Environmental Restoration Division of the LLNL
Environmental Protection Department. Site 300 Environmental Investigations are conducted as
required by the California Regional Water Quality Control Board (RWQCB)—Central Valley
Region and the California Department of Health Services. This work was performed by LLNL
personnel, Weiss Associates, and Brown and Caldwell under the direction of David W.
Carpenter, Michael R. Ruggieri, and Albert L. Lamarre, the Site 300 Project Leader. Figure 1
illustrates the relative locations of Site 300 and the Livermore site within the San Francisco Bay
area. Figure 2 provides more detail concerning Site 300 itself. Succeeding figures illustrate the
specific investigation areas within Site 300.
In Appendix A, Table A-1 contains well completion data and Table A-2 presents monitoring
well analytical data for the Site 300 TCE Investigation. Tables A-3, A-4, and A-5 contain
analytical data for soil and rock analyses. In Appendix B, Table B-1 contains well completion
data, and Tables B-2 through B-4 contain analyses of ground water and soil and rock samples for
the Site 300 HE Process Area Investigation. Analytical results and summary logs for the Landfill
Pit 6 investigation are presented in Appendix C. Geochemical analyses and water level
elevations for the tritium study are presented in Appendix D.
Work Plan
On November 17, 1987 LLNL submitted to the RWQCB-Central Valley Region a work plan
detailing work to be done at Site 300 during FY 1988. Included in that work plan was a time line
showing the various activities to be conducted. Following discussions with the RWQCB-Central
Valley Region, and based upon the results of recent monitoring at Site 300, we have modified the
original work plan and time line. Task 12 of the original work plan has been modified to read as
follows:
Task 12 - RI/FS at Pit 6
Purpose and Rationale
Between 1964 and 1973, Pit 6 received containerized waste materials that were
generated at LLNL and the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory. Following cessation of
waste disposal activities at Pit 6 in 1973, the pit was filled and the site covered by
relatively impermeable soil. The site is presently used as a firearms training and
practice range. No leakage of hazardous material from the pit was detected during
hydrogeologic investigations of the Pit 6 area conducted in 1982, 1984, and 1987.
However, recent ground water monitoring has revealed that ground water in the
1
