i
shallow aquifer downgradient of the pit now contains TCE (see the section on the
Landfill Pit 6 Investigation). LLNL plans to complete a remedial investigation-
feasibility study(RDFS)at Pit 6 by September 1989 that includes the following steps:
1. Install a piezometer on the southwest side of the pit to verify the direction of
ground water flow along the pit's southwest margin (June 1988).
2. Determine the permeability of the material covering the landfill (July
1988).
3. Investigate the source and method of transport of TCE in ground water
downgradient of the pit(September 1988).
4. Complete a feasibility study for remediation of the TCE (September 1989).
Y
PiwRdure
A piezometer will be installed using the well construction methods described
in the work plan submitted previously. The permeability of the cover material will
be determined by conducting appropriate field tests on undisturbed material. We
will drill exploratory borings to collect soil samples for VOC analysis to determine
if a local spill may be the source of the TCE. Some of these borings may be
converted to ground water monitoring wells to determine the extent of TCE in
ground water. Based on the results of the above investigation, engineering field
studies will be conducted to evaluate remedial action alternatives.
The time line from the November 17, 1987, work plan has been modified to
reflect the changes in Task 12, and is presented here as Table 1.
2
I
