At the time of removal, unexpected contamination was noted to exist
in the soil below the tank. Bill Snavely of San Joaquin County Public Health Services
was present at the closure site, noted the contamination, and suggested we perform
additional excavation. Excavation continued to a depth of eleven feet, the limit of the
back hoe. Soil sample TK02-829-01-D1U1-SO-11.0 was collected at a depth of 11.0 feet
in the bottom of the excavation. A second sample,TKOl-829-01-D1U1-SO-3.5,was
collected at a depth of 3.5 feet below the former location of the piping. Samples were
submitted to California Laboratory Services (CLS),in Rancho Cordova, for analyses
according to EPA Method 8015 (TPH-D-diesel fuel) and EPA Method 8020 (BTXE-
benzene,toluene,xylene,and ethylbenzene). Sample TK01-829-01-D1U1-SO-3.5
showed 1600 mg/kg TPH-D,0.029 mg/kg ethylbenzene,and 0.076 mg/kg xylene.
Analysis of sample TK02-829-01-D1U1-SO-3.5 was ND(not detected) for TPH-D and
BTXE analyses. Refer to the attached drawing showing soil sample locations.
Mr. Snavely stated a belief that the diesel fuel contamination evident below the tank
was not the result of spillage or leakage from the just-removed tank. Instead he thought
that the release was old and was the probable result of leakage from a container
previous to the just-removed tank. No one has been identified who has knowledge of a
previous container. However,it is apparent that such a container existed to supply fuel
to the iron horse facility prior to installation of the just removed tank.
An Equal Opportunity Employer•University of Califomia•P.O.Box 808 Livemnore,CA 94551-9900•Telephone(510)422-1100 •Twx 910-386,8339 UCLLL LVMR
