100 Pine Street. 1 Oth Floor
San Francisco. CA 94111 GEOMATRIX
(41 5) 434-9400 • FAX C415) 434-1365
8 December 1997
Project 4440
Ms. Katie Hower
Chevron Pipe Line Company
P.O. Box 5059
San Ramon, California 94583
Subject: Cintra Property Investigation
Byron Road
Tracy, California
Dear Ms. Hower:
This report presents results of a soil and groundwater investigation performed by
Geomatrix Consultants,Inc. (Geomatrix)along the southern edge of the Cintra Property
located in Tracy, California(the site; Figure 1). Geomatrix performed the work on behalf
of Chevron Pipe Line Company(CPL)at the request of the San Joaquin County Public
Health Services, Environmental Health Division(SJCPHS). The objective of the
investigation was to assess the possible presence of petroleum hydrocarbons in this area of
the site subsurface that may be associated with CPL'S Old Valley Pipeline. The field
methods and results of the investigation are described below.
FIELD METHODS
Three soil borings(B-1 through B-3)were advanced at the site by Precision Sampling,
Inc. of San Rafael, California, under the supervision of Geomatrix on 21 November 1997
(Figure 2). Mr. Michael Infurna of the SJCPHS was present at the site and observed all
boring and sampling activities. Prior to boring activities, Geomatrix notified Underground
Service Alert(USA); had the soil boring locations cleared for underground utilities by
Cruz Brothers Sub-Surface Locators, Inc. of Milpitas,California; and obtained a soil
boring permit from the SJCPHS.
All drilling and soil sampling equipment was steam cleaned prior to use. The borings
were advanced using a hydraulically driven core barrel and drive sampler to depths of
approximately 16 feet below ground surface(bgs). The core from each boring was logged
by an on-site Geomatrix geologist; borings logs are included as Attachment 1. Geomatrix
collected several soil samples from each soil boring for possible chemical analyses. Soil
samples were collected in brass sleeves sealed with Teflon sheets, end caps, and tape.
The soil sample analyzed from each boring was selected from approximately six inches
above the water table(at depths of 10, 8, and 11 feet bgs in borings B-1,B-2, and B-3,
respectively).
Geomatrix Consultants, Inc.
Engineers, Geologists, and Environmental Scientists
\ ril. .:...
