5.0 SOIL AND GROUND WATER SAMPLING
Based on the subject site's former use as a service station, Geosystem recommended a
Phase II or intrusive site investigation The Phase II assessment included drilling, soil and
ground water sampling, and chemical analyses. The scope of the Phase II investigation was
submitted to the County (Geosystem, March 20, 1995) and subsequently approved Drilling
and soil sampling, ground water sampling, equipment decontamination, and chemical
analyses are discussed in the following sections.
5 1 DRILLING AND SOIL SAMPLING
In April 1995, eight soil borings, Borings B-1 through B-8, were advanced to total depths of
between 17 and 32 feet below grade The locations of Borings B-1 through B-8 are shown
in Figure 2 Drilling was performed by Kvilhaug Well Drilling and Pump Company, Inc
(License No C57-482390), of Concord, California, using Geoprobe drilling techniques
Bonngs B-1, B4, B-5, B-7, and B-8 were advanced to a total depth of 17 feet below grade
Borings B-2, B-3, and B-6 were advanced to a depth of 32 feet below grade. Soil samples
were collected at nominal 5-foot intervals from each boring Geoprobe soil sampling
involves pushing a 15-inch diameter sampling probe into the soil using a hydraulic cylinder
and a high-speed vibrating hammer. At selected depths, the tip of the probe is retracted
and the hollow probe is advanced into the soil The hollow probe is lined with four 6-inch
long by 7/8 inch diameter brass sample sleeves Upon retrieval from the boring, the sample
sleeves are removed from the probe One of the sample sleeves was sealed with rubberized
plastic end caps and labeled with a unique sample identification number Soil samples
retained for possible chemical analysis were placed in a cooler and preserved on ice pending
delivery to the analytical lab.
The stratigraphyencountered in each of the Geo robe borings was logged in the field by
P
an experienced geologist Edited copies of the field boring logs are included in Appendix D
5-1
GZARSYS T:Eml
Consultants, Inc
