.z
2.0 Reid Procedures
2.7 Sail Vapor Collection System
The system was designed by IT Corporation and reportedly in Called by representatives of
Paradiso Construction Company in conjunction with tank excavation backfill efforts. The
system was constructed of chemically inert, resistant flexible polyethylene piping placed
below grade. Slotted vapor collection piping was laid in pea-gravel backfill in the former
gasoline UST excavation, near the bottom of that backfill. Closed piping was laid in pea-
gravel, at least 18 inches below grade, ir a trench running from the backfilled UST
excavation to a riser and stub-out, for a possible treatment plant. The treatment area is to be
located between a cinder block wall and a service, building,in the northwest comer of the site
(Appendix A).
%3
2.2 Borehole Drilling
-- prior to the commencement of drilling all underground utilities were located by Underground
Services Alert. Soil borings were made ar_d wells were constructed using truck-mounted
hollow stem auger drill rigs. Two California C-57 licensed drilling companies(Water
Development Co. on 4/18!91 and Aqua Science Engineering on 7/29 and 7/30/91) were
,r subcontracted to perform the drilling services. The rf field geologist canducted tailgate
_ s
safety meetings,at the beginning of each day to insure that field activities were performed in
accordance with the site Health and Safety Plan.
t. ! Prior to drilling at each borehole, all angers were thoroughly steam cleaned. The split spoon
^ l F sampler and brass tube inserts were cleaned prior to each sampling event with a non-
phosphate detergent scrubbing, foliwed by a water rinse and a final distilled water rinse
F.: :
Boreboles were logged and soil samples were obtained by using a modified California
sampler under the direction of IT's field geologist. Soils were described using the visual
method of the Unwed Soil Classification System (USCS). Boring logs are contained in
Appendix B. "Sampling methods included grab samples for soil description and examination
as well as samples in decontaminated brass tubes for laboratory analysis.
Iriact soil samples and periodically collected drill cuttings were screened for the release of
volatile organic contaminants with and organic vapor araizer equipped with a
M Z/1 Q2I.91 JUSTK7014 MER
r
Tt
