THIRD QUARTER REPORT
KWIKEE FOODS
2081 Country Club Boulevard
Stockton, California
November 1,2000
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Four new monitoring wells have been installed at Kwikee Foods. Two were drilled with standard
auger equipment in July, one was drilled with a portable hand-held auger unit in August, and one
was drilled with a Geoprobe® rig in October. The latter two wells are constructed of 1-inch
diameter PVC casing. The wells were drilled to provide data on the eastern and northeastern
(downgradient) extent of groundwater contaminantion.
Soil samples were collected in the two auger borings, and six samples were submitted for
laboratory analysis. Hydrocarbons were detected in only one sample, at very low concentrations
(2.98 mg/kg TPH-g). Hence, we conclude that the borings are located east of the perimeter of
contaminated soil. No samples were collected from the hand-held auger boring or the Geoprobe®
boring.
Groundwater monitoring took place in July, after the first two wells were drilled and again in
October, after the last two were drilled. Well casing elevations were surveyed and recorded, and the
depth to groundwater was measured with a water level meter. A battery-operated purge pump was
used to purge the wells of standing water, which was stored in DOT-approved drums on site. After
purging, eight water samples were collected in glass vials and transported to the laboratory, where
they were analyzed for Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons as gasoline, BTEX, and 5 gasoline
oxygenates.
The groundwater flow direction is to the north or northeast, but data from the most recent wells
indicate that the gradient is not planar. Along the west side of the site, elevation contours trend
northward and indicate an eastward flow direction, but the contours curve in a U-shaped pattern
beneath the eastern portion of the site, forming a trough in the gradient. This results in an overall
northward flow direction.
Hydrocarbon concentrations are presently quite low or below detection limits in most wells, but
concentrations are higher in two wells near the southwestern corner of the site. This suggests that a
Plume of contaminated groundwater is present southwest of the site, beneath Country Club
Boulevard, and that its northern margin lies beneath the site. Groundwater monitoring since this
investigation began in 1995 has usually indicated an eastward groundwater flow direction, which
i
