2.3 Regulatory Directives
San Joaquin County PHS/EHD has requested Mr. Peters to expand the
investigation of groundwater
g
contamination in order to more fully delineate its extent. Upgradient Environmental initially
submitted a work plan for groundwater assessment in October 1997, proposing four new wells.
This plan was later amended on several occasions to accommodate delays in bidding and
scheduling the work. These problems were finally resolved in May 2000.
3.0 PROCEDURES
3.1 Drilling and Sampling
V&W Drilling of Rio Vista, California mobilized a Mobile Drill truck-mounted drilling rig to the
site on July 7, 2000 and drilled monitor wells KF-4 and KF-5 (Figure 2). The wells were drilled
with 8-inch-diameter augers to a depth of 25 feet, and soil samples were collected at 5-foot
intervals. When drilling was complete, V&W constructed 2-inch monitor wells in each boring,
using screened PVC casing from 25 to 5 feet and blank casing from 5 feet to the surface. Details of
the well construction are shown in the boring logs (Appendix A).
The soil samples were examined and described on the boring logs, and six samples were
transported to Sequoia Analytical Laboratory for hydrocarbon analysis. The laboratory report and
chain of custody form are included in Appendix B.
Due to the very limited access to the near of the property, V&W Drilling was unable to install
monitoring well KF-6 (Figure 2). Therefore, Upgradient Environmental mobilized a portable
drilling rig to the site on August S and drilled this well with 3-inch-diameter augers to a depth of I5
feet. No soil samples were collected, because the well is located well beyond the known limit of
contaminated soil. When drilling was complete, Upgradient constructed a l-inch monitor well
using screened PVC casing from 15 to 5 feet (Appendix A). One foot of bentonite chips and 2 feet
of cement grout were used to seal the well.
The last well that was scheduled to be drilled (KF-7) was located in the front lawn of the residence
that is located immediately east of Kwikee Foods. This residence is located at 2071 Country Club
Boulevard and is owned by Mr. David Echeverria. Access to this location was hampered by
overhead telephone lines along the sidewalk in front of the residence. After two failed attempts to
drill this well with a standard auger rig, V&W Drilling mobilized a Geoprobe® rig to the site on
October 12. The well was drilled to a depth of 20 feet and completed as a 1-inch well screened from
20 to 5 feet (Appendix A). Soil samples were not collected. The well was completed with 1 foot of
bentonite chips and 2 feet of cement grout.
4
