A S S O C I A T E S I N C
This alternative would reduce the existing levels and volume of impacted groundwater over
time by natural degradation, but the rate of reduction is not known. The possibility of
migration of petroleum hydrocarbons in groundwater caused by nearby dewatering wells exists
until construction activities have been completed. Following completion of construction
activities, sewer or storm drains lines installed in the immediate vicinity of impacted water
could potentially act as conduits.
' 0 Criterion 3:
This alternative would not immediately remediate groundwater or any impacted soil to levels
' acceptable to regulatory agencies. Natural degradation of petroleum hydrocarbons would be
expected to occur over time but it may take several years to reach acceptable levels.
' 0 Criterion 4:
Additional capital investment for this alternative is related to the costs associated with the
' permitting, installation, monitoring and destruction of monitoring wells and report preparation
costs. The cost of this alternative is estimated to be between$25,000 and $65,000.
! 0 Criterion 5:
This alternative is not effective in minimizing the health-based risks in the short term. The
' possibility of exposure to humans by contamination releases through inhalation, ingestion or
dermal exposure to impacted soil or groundwater is considerable during construction activities
but minimal during well installation, monitoring and destruction activities.
0 Criterion 6:
The long term effectiveness of this alternative is poor to fair. This alternative would reduce the
toxicity and volume of the contaminants in the groundwater and soil by natural biodegradation,
but the rate of reduction is not known. There is a possibility for health-based risks in the long
term. Exposure of humans or the environment to impacted soil or groundwater can occur if
additional excavation activities occur in the vicinity of the site or if the sewer and storm drain
' act as conduits and convey impacted groundwater off site.
0 Criterion 7:
' The passive remediation approach is the easy to implement. Well permits would be obtained
from the appropriate agencies and the wells would be installed and monitored on a quarterly
basis. Data would be evaluated on an on-going basis until concentrations warrant a request for
closure.
' w:1822541sun"tdoc 8
