However, regulatory agencies may be hesitant to approve this alternative due to
' the long term duration of the project and uncertainty to meet cleanup goals.
82 Alternative 2 - Groundwater Extraction and Soil Excavation
O Criterion 1:
This remediation alternative has immediate health based risks. Construction activities are
' occurring at the site so the possibility for exposure to humans by inhalation, ingestion or dermal
contact with impacted groundwater is considerable. If a substantial volume of groundwater is
' removed from the excavation prior to and during construction activities, these risks may be
reduced.
O Criterion 2:
This alternative would immediately reduce the volume and concentration of petroleum
hydrocarbons in the groundwater. It would also substantially reduce the potential for migration
or conveyance of impacted groundwater off site. Excavation would effectively reduce the
volume and concentrations of any additional impacted soil encountered at the site, and would
' eliminate the potential for further impacts on groundwater at the site.
O Criterion 3:
' This alternative can be implemented within regulatory guidelines.
' O Criterion 4:
This alternative is comparable in cost to the first alternative. This alternative has costs
' associated with extraction, transport and disposal of impacted groundwater. The cost of this
remediation alternative is estimated to be between$28,000 and$50,000.
O Criterion 5:
The alternative would be effective in the short term because it results in the direct removal of
the impacted groundwater and soil. Extraction and excavation would increase health-based
1' risks to humans via exposure to the impacted groundwater and soil during site activities. The
time required to complete this alternative would be less than 2 months.
' O Criterion 6:
The long term effectiveness would be considerable if the entire volume of impacted
groundwater is removed from the site, preventing any possibility of migration of groundwater.
w:182254sunupt.dm 9
