A S S O C I A T E S I N C
10.1 Field Monitoring
! During construction activities, on-site personnel will conduct field monitoring of excavated soil
' and encountered groundwater. Air monitoring shall be conducted to identify safety and health
hazards in order to determine if personal protection equipment is required. Excavated soil will be
monitored with a PID for the presence of petroleum hydrocarbons. Soil will also be monitored
' using visual and olfactory senses to determine if it is impacted. Any personnel entering the
excavation shall treat it as a confined space and take the appropriate precautionary measures.
10.2 Soil and Groundwater Remediation
{ If impacted soil is encountered during construction activities, an excavator or backhoe will be
j used to remove impacted soil. Excavated soil will be visually inspected and monitored with a PID
for the presence of petroleum hydrocarbons. The excavated soil will be stockpiled on site
' pending characterization. Confirmation soil samples will be collected from the excavation
sidewalls and/or bottom, as necessary.
Impacted groundwater will be extracted from the pit using a trash pump. The water will be stored
1 on site in a temporary holding tank. When the tank is full or when all the impacted groundwater
has been extracted, the groundwater will be manifested and transported off site as nonhazardous
materials for disposal at an appropriate recycling facility. Confirmation groundwater samples will
be collected from the open pit as necessary. If concentrations cannot be reduced to levels which
protect human health, safety, and the environment, then the need for further remediation will be
evaluated.
10.3 Sample Analysis
All samples will be immediately placed on ice and delivered under chain-of-custody
documentation to a State-certified laboratory for analysis. Samples will be analyzed for TPHd
and TPHg using EPA Method 8015 modified, and BTEX using EPA Method 8020. Analysis of
oxygenate fuel additives is not recommended since all previous analytical results indicate that they
are nondetectable. 6( ( f , .
U ► i
J
10.4 Closure Report Preparation
Upon completion of all remediation activities, a report requesting closure of the site will be
Iprepared for submittal to PHS/EHD the California Regional Water Quality Control Board.
w:1822541sumrpt,doc 1
