September 29, 2014 Monitoring Well Abandonment and
Installation Workplan
2.3. Borehole Logging and Soil Sampling
California Department of Water Resources and San Joaquin County require completion and
submittal of Water Well Drillers' Reports. In the Lathrop area, the near surface deposits are
composed of discontinuous inter-bedded silty sand,sandy silt,silty clay,clay,and sand.
Continuous-core samples will be collected using a split-spoon sampler driven ahead of the
drilling tool.Core samples will be removed from the split-spoon sampler and examined to
describe their texture, moisture content, grain size, and color using the Unified Soil
Classification System. The core samples will be bagged and kept chilled for possible pore-
water extraction. Pore water from select core samples may be extracted using a vacuum
pump and filter, and the electrical conductivity of the pore water measured.
In addition to core sample descriptions, the borehole log will also report any changes in the
drilling rate, caving of the borehole,or changes in water temperature or water levels. All
observations will be recorded and reported on a well boring and construction form.
2.4. Health and Safety Plan
No hazardous constituents or contamination are expected at the project site locations, and
all work will be carried out in compliance with Occupational Safety and Health
Administration (OSHA) regulations and guidelines. All personnel working at the site during
well construction and destruction activities shall be familiar with these regulations and
guidelines.
The primary physical hazards are associated with the use of the drilling rig and supporting
vehicles. All drillers performing work must possess required C-57 license, and all drill crew
members shall receive site-specific training prior to beginning work. The licensed driller
shall be responsible for the safe operation of the drill rig as well as the crew's adherence to
all safety procedures. The crew members and other personnel at the site shall wear
protective equipment(i.e.,hard hat, gloves, and steel toed boots),and be aware of all
hazards and control procedures. All personnel working at the site shall participate in the
Daily Safety Meetings and be aware of all emergency procedures.
Before drilling, the existence and location of underground pipe, electrical equipment and
gas lines will be determined.Documentation that nearby utilities have been marked on the
ground, and that the drill site has been cleared shall be in the possession of the Field
Operations Manager prior to commencement of drilling at the site.If drilling is conducted in
the vicinity of overhead power lines, the power to the lines must be shut off or the
equipment must be positioned and blocked such that no part, including cables can come
within the minimum clearances of the lines. All well sites will be inspected by the driller
prior to locating the rig to ensure a stable surface exists.
Hydro Focus, Inc. 7
