4 Boring BH-1 was located 28 feet north of the former wastewater tank in order to clear the
• active rail line and to provide a sample next to a 90° bend in the wastewater line Boring BH-2
was located 12 feet east of boring BH-1 The remaining borings, BH-3 through BH-18,
were positioned at approximate 20-feet intervals along the length of the line, with some minor
adjustments to accommodate driveways and other existing objects The boring locations are
shown in Figure 5
5 Each soil boring was drilled approximately 1 to 2 feet below the wastewater line until native
soil was encountered Samples from the native soil were collected by driving clean brass
sleeves into the soil at the bottom of each boring using a drive sampler After removing the
brass sleeve from the drive sampler, sleeve ends were immediately covered with aluminum
foil, capped with plastic end caps and secured with tape Samples were placed in Ziploc@
bags, stored in an iced cooler and logged on a Chain-of-Custody form Sampling equipment
was decontaminated between borings by washing in a nonphosphate detergent, followed by a
tap water rinse and a final rinse in deionized water
6 Samples were transported under proper Chain-of-Custody to Western Environmental
• Services and Technology (WEST), a California-certified analytical laboratory located in
Davis Samples were analyzed for total extractable petroleum hydrocarbons (TEPH) by
Modified EPA Method 8015 per discussions with San Joaquin County
7 Laboratory results are provided in Table 4 Fifteen of the 18 samples analyzed were reported
to contain no detectable levels of TEPH Samples BH-2 and BH-16 were reported to contain
12 and 110 mg/kg TPHd, respectively, and 13 and 210 mg/kg TPH as motor oil (TPHo),
respectively Sample BH-15 was reported to contain 38 mg/kg TPHo
8 The letter report entitled Results of Soil Sampling Beneath Remaining Wastewater Line, was
submitted to Ms Diane Hinson of San Joaquin County on May 19, 1993, summarizing the
results of the sampling activities A copy of this letter is included in Appendix F Copies of
the laboratory reports and Chain-of-Custody forms for the samples beneath the wastewater
line are also included in Appendix F
9 Based on the above laboratory results, soil beneath the wastewater line was not considered to
have been significantly impacted by petroleum hydrocarbons Therefore, abandonment of
the wastewater line by grouting with cement and removal of the associated riser pipes at each
• end was recommended in the May 19, 1993, letter report.
11
ENVIRONMENTAL SOLUTIONS
