5.2 WASTEWATER LINE CLOSURE ACTIVITIES
1 Following verbal approval for in-place closure of the wastewater line by Ms Diane Hinson
on June 3, 1993, a Workplan for Abandonment of Remaining Wastewater Line was prepared
and submitted to Mr Jerry Wickes of San Joaquin County on June 8, 1993 A copy of the
Workplan is included in Appendix G
2 The wastewater line was abandoned in place on June 10, 1993 The line was severed in half
and two additional risers were added to shorten the length of run A cement truck was used
to pour a lean cement mix into the risers Cement was poured into the risers until it appeared
at the opposite ends of the line and until a minimum volume of cement was placed sufficient
to completely fill the segments of line Following topping off the risers and allowing the
cement to set up, the risers were cut down to 1 foot below ground surface
3 Closure of the wastewater line was witnessed by Mr Hann Knoll of San Joaquin County
6.0 CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
. 1 Three USTs were removed from the Site in November 1990
• A 2,000-gallon UST used for the storage of gasoline
• A 10,000-gallon UST used for the storage of wastewater
• A 26,000-gallon UST used for the storage of diesel fuel
A dispenser and several feet of piping associated with the gasoline tank, and a remote fill line
associated with and located adjacent to the diesel tank were also removed The wastewater
line, connecting the former wastewater tank to the former track pans and inspection pits
located at the former fueling platform, was left in place
2 Sampling of soils within the tank excavations indicated that sods beneath the former diesel tank
and former wastewater tank had been impacted by petroleum hydrocarbons Overexcavation
of these areas was performed, with concurrent sampling, until laboratory results indicated
low to nondetectable levels of petroleum hydrocarbons in the remaining soils Following the
completion of excavation activities, the areas were backfilled with imported fill
3 Excavated soils associated with the USTs were sampled and analyzed, and found to be
nonhazardous With regulatory approval, the excavated sods were used as base material for
a new trailer parking area onsite Surfacing activities were performed from December 1990
• to January 1991
12
ENVIRONMENTAL SOLUTIONS
