2 <br /> 4.0 POTENTIAL EXPOSURE AND ROUTES OF ENTRY • <br /> 1. Potential exposure to petroleum hydrocarbons and volatile organic compounds may occur <br /> during tank removal and soil sampling. The primary routes of entry for petroleum <br /> hydrocarbons and volatile organics associated with soil particles are: (1)inhalation of dust <br /> and/or vapors, (2)ingestion,and(3)skin and eye contact. <br /> 2. Skirt contact with volatile organic compounds may cause skin irritations. Chronic <br /> overexposure may result in liver and kidney damage. Some of the potential contaminants <br /> may cause central nervous system depression <br /> 5.0 PERSONNEL RESTRICTIONS <br /> 1. The following individuals are subject to restricted access because of possible adverse health <br /> affects from the potential contaminants found at the site. These individuals are: <br /> • PersonneI with Iddney,liver,central nervous system,metabolic or <br /> respiratory problems are restricted from the immediate work arra,as the . <br /> potential contaminants may aggravate an existing condition <br /> 6.0 PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT <br /> 1. All personnel on site will be required to wear a hard hat,steel-toe boots and safety glasses, to <br /> protect against injury from activities relating to site work. The breathing zone in the area of <br /> the tank removal will be monitored with an organic vapor meter equipped with a <br /> photoionization detector. If readings exceed 100 ppm total organic vapors in the breathing <br /> zone,work will be stopped and tyvek coveralls, gloves and air-purifying respirators with <br /> organic cartridges will be donned prior to continuing. If concentrations exceed 1,000 ppm, <br /> work will be snapped and further monitoring will be performed to assess the nature of the <br /> contamination and level of protection required <br /> 7.0 EMERGENCIES IN THE FIELD <br /> 1. In case an accident should occur in the field,the nearest appropriate facility Ci.e.,medical • <br /> facility,fire department,police department)will be notified immediately.
