' GEOMATRIX
HEALTH RISK SCREENING EVALUATION
Surland Homes Property (Laurelbrook)
Tracy, California
' 1.0 INTRODUCTION
Geomatrix Consultants, Inc. (Geomatrix)has prepared this report on behalf of ChevronTexaco
Environmental Management Company(ChevronTexaco) for the Surland Homes Property
(Laurelbrook) located in Tracy, California(Figure 1). This report presents a brief background
1 discussion of the site and the surrounding area, a summary of the environmental investigations
and results from the site, and the results of the human and ecological health screening evalua-
tion associated with residual petroleum hydrocarbons in soil and groundwater. Additional
details of past investigations are presented in the references cited at the end of this report.
2.0 BACKGROUND INFORMATION
ChevronTexaco's former Old Valley Pipeline(OVP)was located adjacent to the Union Pacific
1 Railroad Company right-of-way which runs along the north side of West Byron Road (Figure
1). The OVP and the right-of-way are located along the southern edge of the Laurelbrook resi-
dential subdivision which currently consists of more than 100 single-family homes over
approximately 15 acres. The Laurelbrook subdivision is one of several tracts of land north and
1 south of the OVP and right-of-way that have been recently developed into residential homes.
The former OVP transported heavy petroleum (crude and fuel oil) from Bakersfield to Rich-
mond, California, from the early 1900s to the 1950s. Also present in the right-of-way was the
former Associated Pipe Line (APL) Company's(predecessor to Texaco and now
' ChevronTexaco)pipeline that transmitted heavy crude from the Central Valley to the Bay Area
from the early 1900s to the 1970s when it was decommissioned.
An initial soil and groundwater investigation was conducted at the site in July 1998. The
investigation included advancing eight soil borings (GB-1 through GB-8) and the collection
' and analyses of soil and grab groundwater samples. Analytical results for soil and groundwater
samples are presented in Tables 1 and 2, respectively. Results of the investigation indicate that
' petroleum hydrocarbons are present in the site subsurface and that the lateral and vertical extent
of petroleum hydrocarbon-affected soil is constrained.
1
1:\Doc_Safe\6000s\6447.007ViRA\Swlaod HRA.doc 1
