Mr. Michael J. Infurna, Jr.
August 25, 1998
Page Two
characterized as gasoline, TPH characterized as diesel, and PAHs were detected at low
concentrations in the grab groundwater sample collected from within the petroleum-
affected soil. Based on Geomatrix's review of the chromatograms, it appears that these
detections are likely the result of interference from petroleum-affected soil particulates
(<0.7 microns in size for TPH characterized as diesel analysis) entrained within the
sample. While it is likely that residual petroleum present in the soil is not providing a
significant source of dissolved petroleum constituents to groundwater, based on
discussions held on August 18, 1998 with you, CPL is proposing to install two temporary
groundwater monitoring wells near borings GB-1 and GB-4 to further assess this
conclusion. A letter work plan regarding the installation of these two monitoring wells
will follow under separate cover.
If you have any questions or require additional information, please call Elizabeth Lu at
(925)842-6855.
Sincerely,
K.L.
