20 February 1996
AGE-NC Project No. 95-0197
_Page 4 of 5
' 4.0. FINDINGS
4.1 SOIL PROFILE
' Slightly moist, brown, silty, very fine- to fine-grained sand was encountered from surface grade to
depths of approximately 10 feet. Pale brown to white, very fine-to medium-grained, loose sand was
' encountered from depths of approximately 10 to 20 feet bsg. Gray to blue, moist, very fine to
medium-grained silty sand was encountered from depths of 20 to 25 feet bsg.
' Each probing at the site was terminated in blue to gray, saturated, well-graded gravel and sand
mixtures encountered from depths of 25 to 30 feet bsg. Groundwater was encountered in each boring
at a depth of approximately 27 feet bsg. Boring logs are included in Appendix A.
4.2 FIELD EVIDENCE OF HYDROCARBON-IMPACTED SOIL
Slight hydrocarbon odors were detected from probing B3, while pronounced blue staining was noted
from samples collected in all probings at depths of 25 to 30 feet bsg. Organic vapors were detected
using the PID in soil samples from B3 at concentrations up to 34 parts per million(ppm).
' 4.3 ANALYTICAL RESULTS OF SOIL SAMPLES
' A total of twelve soil samples were submitted to CAL for laboratory analysis. TPH-g was detected
from soil sample B1-25 at a concentration of 220 mg/kg (parts per million: ppm); TPH-d was
detected in soil samples from probings B1, B3, and B5 at concentrations up to 12 ppm. Toluene and
' xylenes were detected in soil samples B l-10 and B6-15 at concentrations ranging between 0.025 ppm
and 0.54 ppm. Analytical results of soil samples are summarized in Table 1. The laboratory report
(CAL Laboratory Nos. 658-1 S through 658-8S and 663-1S through 663-5S) and chain-of-custody
' are included in Appendix'B.
4.4. ANALYTICAL RESULTS OF GROUND WATER SAMPLES
A total of three grab ground water samples were submitted to CAL for analysis. TPH-g was detected
' in the ground water sample from B3 at a concentration of 5,800 gg/L (parts per billion: ppb); TPH-d
was detected in the ground water samples from B3 and B6 at concentrations of 4,000 ppb and 200
ppb, respectively. BTE&X were detected in the ground water sample from B3 at concentrations of
160, 140, 95, and 570 go (ppb), respectively. Benzene was also detected in the ground water
sample from B5 at a concentration of 0.73 ppb. Analytical results of ground water samples are
' summarized in Table 2.
