3. INVESTIGATION OBJECTIVE AND RATIONALE
3.1 Objective
The objective of this investigation is to evaluate the current soil and groundwater
conditions associated with the identified RECs and historic REC, as described in the
Phase I ESA.
3.2 Rationale
Groundwater and soil samples will be collected to evaluate the current conditions at the
Site. The following provides rationale for the proposed data-collection locations shown
on Figure 2:
• Soil sampling at soil boring locations GSB-1 through GSB-4: Soil sampling
will be conducted to evaluate the soil conditions at the Site for the presence of
herbicides and pesticides. Spent lime was mixed with native soil and"tare" soil
(soil generated during beet washing) before being redistributed in the vicinity of
the sugar plant. The Site was included in the area that was graded and filled
with the lime soil mixture in 1999. Soil samples will be collected from each
location as shown on Figure 2.
Groundwater Sample Collection: Groundwater typically flows to the north to
northwest. Locations GSB-1 and GSB-2 are located on the downgradient edge
of the Site and will provide data for groundwater flowing away from the Site.
GSB-3 is located on the upgradient edge of the Site and will provide data for
groundwater flowing into the Site. One groundwater sample will be collected
from each boring at GSB-1 through GSB-3.
5 11.15.2013
20131115 Manteca Phase II Work Plan
