K L E I N F E L D F R
V PREFIELD ACTIVITIES
The work was accomplished as outlined in Kleinfelder's Scope of Work No. 20-YPO-091, dated
August 18, 2000. The scope of work was submitted to and approved by the San Joaquin County
Public Health Services Environmental Health Division (PHS/EHD). Kleinfelder obtained the
drilling permit from PHS/EHD and scheduled the fieldwork. Underground Services Alert (USA)
tM was notified for locations of underground utilities.
FIELD ACTIVITIES
t"
Drilling and Soil Sampling
L" On August 30, 2000, Kleinfelder geologist Lou Smith observed the advancement of two
Geoprobe borings GP-1 and GP-2 at the locations indicated on Plate 2. Mr. Jeff Wong from the
PHS/EHD and site owner Mr. Roy Fowler were present during the drilling and sampling
- activities. The borings were advanced utilizing a truck-mounted Geoprobe direct-push
technology drill rig. All drilling and sampling activities were performed by En Probe, a C-57
licensed drilling contractor from Oroville, California.
The sediments encountered during drilling consisted primarily of silts, sands, and clays. The
sediments were classified using the Unified Soil Classification System (USCS) (Attachment A-
1). During drilling, soil samples were collected from each boring at approximately five-foot
intervals to the total depth of the boring. GP-1 was advanced vertically to 17 feet below grade.
GP-2 was advanced 32 feet at an angle of approximately 16 degrees off of vertical to collect soil
samples directly beneath the former UST excavation. The soil samples were evaluated for the
presence of petroleum hydrocarbon vapors with a portable photo-ionization detector (PID). Any
evidence of petroleum hydrocarbons was recorded in parts per million (ppm) on the boring logs
(Attachments A-3 & A-4). The boring logs also document soil types, sample intervals, and
sample identification numbers as described on the Log Key (Attachment A-2). Soil samples
L. were selected for laboratory analysis at the direction of the PHS/EHD. Soil samples were
contained in chilled storage pending transport to the laboratory for the requested analyses.
r`. Upon completion of drilling, each boring was sealed with a bentonite/cement grout placed with a
tremmie pipe from the bottom of the boring to the surface. There were no soil cuttings due to the
direct-push drilling technology, which does not generate cuttings.
Groundwater Sampiin
Groundwater grab samples were collected from borings GP-1 and GP-2 at depths of 16 and 22
feet, respectively, at the direction of the PHS/EHD. The water sample collected at 22 feet from
GP-2 is from approximately the same strata as the GP-1 sample. Stainless steel well screen was
La installed in the boring and water samples were collected with a stainless steel bailer or poly
tubing and placed in appropriately preserved containers. Each container was labeled with a
tv sample number, location, date and time, and the sampler's name/number. Groundwater samples
were contained in chilled storage pending transport to the laboratory for the requested analyses.
Field parameters (pH, conductivity, and temperature) were measured on each sample and
- 20-4489-01-E01/2000L859/2000W035 Page 2 of 5
Copyright 2000 Kleinfelder, Inc.
