on Figure 2. ,
After collection and labeling, the samples were immediately put on ice and cooled to
approximately 4°C. Chain of Custody documentation acrompani id all samples from the time
of collection to the time of delivery to the onsite mobile laboratory and the offsite stationary
laboratory. Copies of the Analysis Request and Chain of Custody records for all samples are
aincluded in this UST removal report as Appendix E. I
2.4 Sample Analysis
The methods utilized in the analysis of the UST excavation; overburden and overexcavation
a
stockpile soil samples were modified EPA method 8015 with a gasoline and diesel standard,
I
{ EPA method 8020 used for benzene, toluene, ethyl benzene; and xylenes (BTEX) and methyl
# tertiary butyl ether (MTBE) distinction. The stockpile composite samples were additionally
.i
analyzed for total lead using EPA method 6010 and for reativity' corrosivity and ignitability
(RCI) using California Title 22 methodology. All soil samples collected during tank removal
and overexcavation activities on May 2 and 3, 1996, were analyzed onsite using a mobile
laboratory operated by Sparger Technology Incorporated (Sparger) of Sacramento, California
(with the exception of the total lead and RCI analyses whicl the mobile lab was unable to
I` perform - these tests were completed by Sparger in their stationary laboratory in Sacramento,
California).
E
Analysis of soil samples (SSA-EMR-001 and SSA-EMR-002) collected from theg asoline
UST excavation floor (middle and east end of the excavation respectively), revealed
ii
detectable gasoline, BTEX and MTBE lead concentrations. ,Soil sample SSA-EMR-001 was
found to contain: 3,400 parts per million (ppm) unleaded gasoline, 3.7 ppm benzene, 59 ppm
toluene, 39 ppm ethyl benzene and 163 ppm xylenes and 4.9 ppm!MTBE, upon analysis.
li
Analysis of soil sample SSA-EMR-002 revealed 18 ppm gasoline,,',0.019 ppm benzene, 0A2
ppm toluene, 0.34 ppm ethyl benzene, 1.1 ppm xylenes and X0.73 ppm MTBE. Analysis of
soil samples SSA-EMR-003 SSA-EMR-004 -
p EMR 004 and SSA EMR 005 (collected from the.west end
of the gasoline tank excavation, the east end of the diesel fuel tank excavation and the west
end of the diesel fuel tank excavation respectively) revealedno detectable petroleum
hydrocarbon concentrations.
Analysis of composite soil sample STP-EMR-001, collected.from the gasoline tank
overburden stockpile, revealed no detectable petroleum hydrocarbon concentrations.
