low
under the direction of IT Corporation representatives. Inspector Harlan Knoll of the SJCPHS-
EHD was present to witness the overexcavation and verification sample collection. The
4 eastern half of the excavation was overexcavated from an original depth of 17.0 feet to a final
depth of 20.0 feet, using an excavator. The removed soils (approximately 50 yd) were
stockpiled adjacent to the western edge of the gasoline tank excavation for future disposal.
Upon review of overexcavation verification sample analytical results, permission to install the
new tank in the gasoline tank excavation was granted by Harlan Knoll. Authorization to use
the gasoline tank overburden stockpile as backfill for the diesel tank excavation was also
r.. granted by Harlan Knoll. Reinstallation of these soils was conducted on May 3, 1996. The
n new 15,000 gallon split UST was installed on May 6, 1996 under supervision of a SJCPHS-
EHD representative.
2.3 Soil Sampling
Under the direction of Inspector Letitia Briggs on May 2, 1996, five soil samples were
collected from the diesel and unleaded gasoline tank excavations. Three of these samples
(SSA-EMR-001, SSA-EMR-002 and SSA-EMR-003) were collected at the base of the
gasoline tank excavation and two of the samples (SSA-EMR-004 and SSA-EMR-005) were
+ collected from the base of the diesel tank excavation, following the removal of all fill
materials from each excavation. No soil sampling was required beneath the UST pipelines, as
O.W the piping was fully contained within the tank excavation area. Two four point composite
soil samples (STP-EMR-001 and STP-EMR-002) were collected from the overburden
stockpiles.
On May 3, 1996, following overexcavation activities conducted in the eastern half of the
gasoline tank excavation, three soil samples (SSA-EMR-006, SSA-EMR-007 and SSA-EMR-
008) were collected from the overexcavated area under the direction of SJCPHS-EHD
inspector Harlan Knoll, at depths of eighteen and twenty feet below grade.
ONO The soil samples from the tank excavation side walls and floor were collected from native
soil in the backhoe or excavator bucket, utilizing two-inch by six-inch brass sleeves. The
60 UST overburden and overexcavation stockpile samples were collected using a sample coring
device containing two inch by six inch brass sleeves. The sample corer was driven into each
desired sampling location using an attached slide hammer. Soil sampling locations are shown
3
w
