0$/11/03 _MON 16:00 FAX 19258272029 SHAW E & I Z004
Ms. Margaret 1 agorio
August 11, 2003
Page 2
The results of he analysis detected TPH-D in one of the dispenser island samples [DI-01(5'/Z')]
at a concentrat:on of 210 parts per million(ppm). No other I etroleum hydrocarbon analytes were
detected in any of the remaining soil samples.
Over-Excava lion Activities
In order to reraove the impacted soils underlying the dispe:aser island, SBC has requested that
Gettler over-e:Ecavate the area under the supervision of S liaw personnel. The planned over-
excavation ar(a is delineated in Figure 1. Based on tho relatively low concentrations and
mobility of di nel, Shaw anticipates that the excavation area will be deepened to a depth of
approximately 7.5 feet below surface grade (bsg), two feet b elow the original sample depth, and
widened an ad iitional two feet in the area of the former displ:nser island
Following over-excavation,one verification soil sample wia be collected from the newly
excavated area. The confirmation soil sample will be sent tc McCampbell on a 24-hour
turnaround tirr.e. The soil sample will be analyzed for the same laboratory analytes as before
(TPH-D,TPH-G,BTEX, and five fuel oxygenates).
Upon receipt c f the analytical results, in the event the verific;tion soil sample cavae back non-
detect or beloN r San Joaquin County Environmental Health Department guidelines, the tank
excavation wi:l be backfilled using the original soil stockpile; (which carne back as non-detect)
and imported clean fill material. Soils generated during ova:-excavation activities will be
transported of:-site for disposal. In the event the verification sample contains petroleum
hydrocarbons above the San Joaquin County Environmental Health Department cleanup
guidelines, the excavation will be further widened and degjcried, with additional verification
samples collected as required.
The removed, oils will be segregated and stockpiled adjacent to the edge of the tank excavation
for future disposal, pending analytical results. It is anticipatard any impacted soils will be shipped
as non-bazard,)us waste to Forward Landfill in Stockton, California for disposal. In the event
analytical resu Its indicate the soil is hazardous, the soil will.:likely be transported to the
Kettleman Hill Landfill in Kettleman City, California for des posal. It is anticipated Denbeste
Transportatioi L will provide transportation of any impacted soils to the appropriate landfall.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me at (925)288-2119. Thank you for your
assistance in t its matter!
Sincerely,
Shaw Enviro amental,Inc.
Rob Delnagr
Project Manager
