WALLACE•KUHLV ASSbQATFS.INC 1
SITE EVALUATION/REMEDIATION WORKPLAN
l' U.S. SPRINT
WKA No. 1004.41
January 24, 1991
Page 2
'r
r
r
Proposed Scope of Work
Contaminated soil will be removed from the affected area using an excavator until TPH - diesel
levels in the resulting excavation are below 100 ppm (based on current LUFT manual guidelines),,
or until ground water is encountered. The excavation is not anticipated to extend deeper than
6 feet in the area of the former product line. The excavation will extend laterally until the
proposed cleanup level has been achieved, or until further excavation is limited by structures or
property boundaries. The concrete"tank hold-down stab"at 12 feet below original grade will also
be removed. Clean soil will be segregated from contaminated soil daring excavation;
contaminated soil will be placed on and covered with 10 mil plastic sheeting. We estimate that
approximately 100 yards of contaminated soil will be excavated and stockpiled on site.
A minimum of one sidewall sample and one bottom sample for every ±200 square feet will be
collected. Soil collected in the excavator bucket will be sampled by driving clean two-inch
diameter brass tubes into the soil. Sample tubes will be capped with aluminum foil and plastic
caps, sealed with tape and preserved on ice. All equipment will be cleaned with trisodium
phosphate before sampling and between sampling events. Samples will be submitted to an on-
site California-certified laboratory for analyses for TPH - diesel using EPA test method 8015
modified. Samples will be handled and transported in accordance with the most recent state and
county guidelines.
When the excavation is determined to be "clean," based on laboratory test results, it will be
backfilled with clean, compacted fill to original grade upon approval of your department.
Stockpile CharacterizationDisposal/Remediation
.
Four samples per 50 cubic yards of stockpiled soil will be collected and combined in the
g4 tC laboratory into one sample. Samples will be collected by driving a brass tube into the stockpiled
S Y45 soils, and sealing the tubes with aluminum foil and plastic caps wrapped with tape. Samples will
be tested for TPH - diesel to determine the degree of contamination and to provide a basis for
evaluation of disposal/remediation options.
All work will be performed under the supervision of a registered geologist from our firm. Upon
completion of our field work and the laboratory testing, we will prepare a formal report which will
include:
• a site plan showing the extent of excavation and the soil sample locations
• laboratory test results and chain-of-custody documentation
- recommendations for remediation or disposal of the stockpiled contaminated soil and/or
further investigation, if necessary.
