29 September 2003
AGE-NC Project No. 01-0865
Following sample collection, the samples will be placed in laboratory-supplied containers and
transported under chain-of-custody to a DHS-certified laboratory.Proposed soil boring locations are
illustrated on Figure 2.Following CPT advancement the total depth of the boring will be backfilled
with type III portland neat cement and not more than 6 gallons of water per 94-pound sack of
cement. The grout will be placed by pumping through tremie pipe. A grouting inspection will be
scheduled with EHD personnel.
5.3. MONITORING WELL ABANDONMENT
Monitoring well MW-1,(Figure 3)will be abandoned utilizing a truck-mounted drill rig equipped
with 8-inch hollow stem augers. The well will be over-drilled from surface grade to total depth of
the well. The boring will be backfilled to surface grade using Type IT portland neat cement and not
more than 6 gallons of water per 94-pound sack of cement.
5.4. MONITORING WELL DRILLING AND SOIL SAMPLING
Soil borings will be advanced utilizing a truck-mounted,hollow-stem drill rig and 8-inch diameter
hollow-stem augers. Cuttings generated during drilling activities will be placed on plastic sheeting
and covered.Rinseate will be containerized in properly labeled DOT-approved 55-gallon drums, and
stored on-site in an area lacking public access. Disposal alternatives will be evaluated based on
results of soil and water analysis.
Soil samples will be collected at five-foot intervals, beginning at a depth of 5 feet bsg, and at
significant lithologic contacts identified during the CPT investigation, utilizing a California
split-spoon sampler and brass sleeves. The sampler will be driven by dropping a 140-pound weight
from a height of 30 inches (blow counts). The blow counts will be recorded on boring logs. Upon
soil sample retrieval,a selected brass sleeve will be removed from the sampler. The ends of the brass
sleeve will be immediately covered with Teflon sheets, sealed with plastic end caps, secured with
tape and immediately placed in a chilled container for transportation under chain of custody to a
state-certified laboratory. Each sample sleeve will be labeled with the boring location, sample depth,
sample time, sampling date and sampler's initials.
During sampling activities, sample duplicates will be monitored for the presence of organic vapor
using a photo-ionization detector (PID: Thermo Environmental 580A, 10.0 eV, calibrated to
isobutylene) and will be visually described on boring logs using the Unified Soil Classification
System(USCS).
Advanced GeoFnvlronmcntal,Inc
