' Report-Soil and Groundwater Investigation
Herman&Helen's Marina
September 26, 1995
' Page-4-
Gasoline odors were noted the soil and groundwater in each borehole. Olive green petroleum
' staining was observed in soil samples collected from HP-1 and HP-2. FID screening of the soil
samples collected during the drilling indicated organic vapors ranging from 12 parts per million (ppm)
' to 2,200 ppm.
The soil samples collected from the capillary fringe (3 samples total) were retained,
undisturbed, in the brass liners for laboratory analyses. The liners were sealed at the ends with
' Teflon tape, capped, wrapped with duct tape, and labeled. The samples were stored in a cooler
chilled with ice and delivered within 24 hours of collection, under chain-of-custody procedures, to
' GeoAnalytical Laboratories of Modesto, California. The samples were analyzed using U.S. EPA
Methods and California-approved methods under strict quality assurance measures.
' Upon completion of the drilling and sampling, the boreholes were grouted with a cement slurry
containing 4 percent bentonite. The slurry was tremied into the borehole to avoid bridging. The
soil cuttings from the borings and steam cleaning effluent were placed in 55-gallon drums, sealed,
labeled, and left on site pending laboratory analyses. Disposal of hazardous materials, if any, will be
' the responsibility of the property owner.
f3.4 Hydropunch H- Groundwater Sampling
The Hydropunch II is a sampler designed to be pushed or driven into the aquifer from the
' bottom of a drilled borehole, using a drill rig, to collect a groundwater sample from a discrete zone.
The sampler utilizes an air-tight and water-tight sealed PVC intake screen and stainless steel sample
chamber which is isolated from the surrounding environment as the sampler is advanced (See Figure 3,
Appendix A for Hydropunch II design). When the desired depth for collection of a groundwater
1 sample is reached, the Hydropunch is opened by pulling back on the body of the sampler, exposing
the screen. When the screen is full, a Teflon bailer is lowered into the Hydropunch push rod and a
groundwater sample is retrieved from the sample chamber.
The groundwater sampling was conducted by B&F Drilling, under the supervision of a
Condor geologist. Prior to sampling, the Hydropunch II sampler and Teflon bailer were cleaned in a
' solution of laboratory-grade, non-phosphate detergent and hydrocarbon-free water, and then double-
' tit' CONDOR
