Report-Soil and Groundwater Investigation
Herman&Helen's Marina
September 26, 1995
' Page-3-
The hydropunch boreholes were drilled using 6-inch diameter, hollow stem auger. The
augers and bit were steam cleaned prior to use. Two (2) of the hydropunch boreholes (HP-1 and
' HP-2) were located on the levee and were drilled to depths of approximately 16 and 11 feet below the
top of the levee (btl), respectively. The third hydropunch borehole (HP-3) was located below the
' levee and was drilled to a depth of approximately 6 feet below the ground surface (bgs). At each
borehole, the Hydropunch II sampling screen was hydraulically pushed approximately 4 feet beyond
' the bottom of the borehole (i.e., HP-1 to 20 ft btl, HP-2 to 15 ft btl, and HP-3 to 10 ft bgs). No
artesian flow was encountered during the drilling.
' 3.3 Soil Sampling
Soil samples were collected at five (5) foot intervals using a California-modified, split-spoon
sampler fitted with three clean, brass liners. The soil sampling equipment (i.e., split-spoon) was
cleaned prior to collecting each sample. The cleaning procedures consisted of washing the sampling
' spoon in a solution of laboratory-grade, non-phosphate detergent and hydrocarbon-free water, and
double-rinsing with hydrocarbon-free water.
During the sampling, the split-spoon sampler was driven approximately 1.5 feet ahead of the
' auger. The uppermost liner was discarded. One sample liner was used for geological logging and
for field screening using an organic vapor analyzer (OVA-FID) and the bottommost liner was prepared,
' as described below, for shipment to the laboratory. The soil samples were logged according to the
Unified Soil Classification System. Geological logs were prepared and contain field observations
' including soil type, estimated moisture content, presence of staining or odor, and field FID
measurements (Appendix B, Geological Logs).
' The soil types encountered while drilling on the levee (HP-1 and HP-2) consisted of gravelly
tsilt and sand at the 5 foot depth and clayey, fine-sand at 10 feet btl. HP-1 was drilled to a depth of
16 feet btl where layered clay and peat were noted. Groundwater was encountered in HP-1 at 16 feet
' btl and stabilized at 11 feet btl. In 14P-2, groundwater was encountered at 13 feet btl and remained at
that level. The soil type encountered at HP-3 consisted of 100% organics (compacted peat) at 5 feet
' bgs. Groundwater was encountered and stabilized at approximately 6 feet bgs.
' i• CONDOR
