All equipment that comes into contact with potentially contaminated soil
or water will be decontaminated. However, no equipment coming into contact with potentially
contaminated soil or water will be re-used at a subsequent sampling point. Disposable
groundwater sampling equipment intended for one-time use will not be decontaminated, but will
be packaged for appropriate disposal. Dedicated sediment and wood sampling equipment shall
be used. Dedicated sampling 'equipment shall not be re-used at another sampling location.
However, all non-disposable sampling devices used, including trowels, knives, etc. will be
steam-cleaned or decontaminated according to the following:
The following, to be carried out'In sequence, is an EPA Region IX recommended procedure for
the decontamination of sampling equipment:
• Detergent and tap water wash, using a brush if necessary (e.g., Alconox or
trisodium phosphate)
• Tap-water rinse
• 0.1 N nitric acid rinse
• Deionized/distilled water rinse
Equipment will be decontaminated in a predesignated area on pallets or plastic sheeting, and
clean bulky equipment will be stored on plastic sheeting in uncontaminated areas. Cleaned small
equipment will be stored in plastic bags. Materials to be stored more than a few hours will also
be covered.
7.0 DISPOSAL OF RESIDUAL MATERIALS
In the process of collecting environmental samples at the Weber Block site, field sampling team
will generate different.types of potentially contaminated investigation-derived waste (IDW) that
includes the following:
• Used personal protective equipment (PPE)
• Disposable sampling equipment
• Decontamination fluids
• Soil cuttings from soil borings
• Purged groundwater and excess groundwater collected for sample container filling.
I
The EPA's National Contingency Plan (NCP) requires that management of IDW generated during
i sampling comply with all applicable or relevant and appropriate requirements (ARARs) to the
extent practicable.
