i
It is unknown what was stored in the sheds and transported from the loading terminals. By the
r early 1950s, the Stockton Channel was covered by an aboveground parking lot and by a portion
_ of the former Shell gasoline service station building. The service station was later operated by
the Bridgestone Tire automobile repair facility.
Potential off--site sources identified include:
North of Weber Block
• a former gasoline service station/automobile dealership on the northeast corner of El
Dorado Street and Channel Street; a former insecticide manufacturing facility; two former
automobile repair shops; and.a former machine shop.
South of WeberBlock
• a'former Standard gasoline station; a former print shop; a former fertany; and
ilizer comp
former "industrial tracks" (railroad tracks) on traversing Weber Avenue.
East of WeberBlQck
• former Goodyear Tire and Auto Repair facility.
{
West of Weber Block
• former ARCO gasoline service station.,
2.4 Previous Investigations
t Subsurface soil samples were collected during 1985 as part of the initial investigation of potential
contamination associated with the former Shell gasoline service station. Additional subsurface
soil samples and groundwater samples were collected during several quarterly monitoring events.
Refer to Tables 1 and 2 and Plates 2, 3, and 4 in Appendix E for a summary of previous soil and
groundwater results for the former gasoline service statior.L The areas sampled are limited to the
areas shown by sample locations in Figure 2-3.
One used oil underground storage tank (UST) and four 4,000-gallon steel gasoline USTs were
installed at the site in 1955. In 1963, one 4,000-gallon gasoline UST was removed and two
7,500-gallon USTs were installed at the site. The remaining USTs (three 4,000-gallon USTs and
two 7,500-gallon USTs) were removed in 1981 and the used oil UST was removed in 1991.
Releases of petroleum hydrocarbon contamination have impacted the soil and groundwater.
Remedial efforts via soil vapor extraction 'and groundwater extraction have occurred on the
northeast portion of the site. In 1992, Shell began soil vapor extraction remediation at the former
service station to remove residual petroleum hydrocarbons from soil and groundwater.
